Native New Yorker, Joan St. James was a piano prodigy who started playing at age three. When she graduated from the Juilliard School in New York, bandleader Guy Lombardo heard her perform with her first trio and immediately booked her opposite his Royal Canadians.

Programs that included Count Basie and Duke Ellington followed as well as Radio and Television appearances. As a soloist, she was engaged by New York's most prestigious hotels, including a 15-year-run at the Helmsley Park Lane on Central Park South.

Over the course of her career, she had the privilege of entertaining amongst others, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel, United States President Richard M. Nixon, Surrealist Salvador Dali, and Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
