Alex Brown, a multi-faceted musician now residing in Boston, is an up and coming talent, who is quickly establishing both a national and international reputation. Alex is currently studying with Danilo Perez at the prestigious New England Conservatory. He has studied jazz piano for the past few years with Stanley Cowell and violin with Eddie Drennon. Alex is also a composer.
Alex received two “Outstanding Performance Awards†from Downbeat Magazine in 2005, on both piano, and violin. In 2004, Alex performed with the internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors of the U.S. Army Field Band. His performance included his award winning original Big Band composition, "Take the T"(named for the Boston transit system). Other notable recent performances include the Greater Hartford Jazz Festival, the East Coast Jazz Festival, the Baltimore Washington Jazz Fest, “All That Jazz Weekend†in Asheville, NC, the Chestertown Jazz Festival, the Curacao Jazz Festival, and the Telluride Jazz Festival with the Telluride All Stars. Also, he was one of ten semifinalists in the Fish-Middleton Jazz Scholarship Competition at the 2005 East Coast Jazz Festival. This fall, he performed in Maryland with Grammy-nominee Jane Bunnett.
In the fall of 2004, Alex was accepted into the prestigious BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop, led by Jim McNeely and Michael Abene, which meets regularly in NYC. Alex was also recently awarded an Honorable Mention for his piece "Take the T" by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). His Big Band piece, "Superman," as well as his Afro-Cuban Jazz adaptation of the traditional Jewish folksong, "Kol Han'shama," recently garnered Outstanding Award in Downbeat Magazine. In addition, he won the VCU Jazz Composition Competition with his Big Band composition, “WL Guidance Department†which was recently premiered in Richmond, Virginia.
Alex has appeared on stage with many distinguished jazz musicians including the late bassist Keter Betts; trumpeter, Terell Stafford; saxophonist, Gary Thomas; trumpeter, Jon Faddis; flutist, Dave Valentin; drummer, Allison Miller; guitarist, Larry Coryell; guitarist, Steve Abshire; saxophonist, Jane Bunnett; bassist, Pepe Gonzalez; Nasar Abadey, drummer; and the late bassist, Arvell Shaw.
A well rounded musician, Alex's classical accomplishments include numerous first place awards in competitions. At the age of 13, Alex won first place in the Encore Orchestra Young Artist Competition, which gave him the opportunity to perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in its entirety with a full orchestra.
