HAMMONDBEAT is proud to present "FEED A FEVER", the long-awaited sophomore effort from Vancouver's BARON SAMEDI ECSTATIC SOUL QUINTET. The BSESQ follow 2002's spectacular debut "ECSTATIC SOUL QUINTET: LIVE, NO OVERDUBS" with a far more mature and carefully arranged effort, recorded over 3 days at Vancouver's now-legendary Hive Creative Labs by Colin Stewart (Destroyer, Black Mountain, Pretty Girls Make Graves). The fruit of their labor is an uncompromising neo-souljazz masterpiece.
An album in three movements, "FEED A FEVER" opens with the dance floor friendly "Archie Moore", "Eagleskin Coat" and "O Soledad". The first of the woozy, carnival-esque "Lowreybeat" interludes segues into heavy, progressive monsters "Ponytail & Cyclingshorts" and "The Pride of Malabar". "Lowreybeat II" introduces the mutant Latin number "Quixote Steez" which flows directly into the somber, shambling closer "Sanjay, Please Come Home". The BSESQ have managed to distill a massive array of influences and emotions into 38-plus minutes of unique instrumental music, all dressed up in the wonderfully surreal oil paintings of (original drummer) Mark Neufeld.
Alongside founding members Steven Balogh (bass; Anemones), Shane Krause (saxophones; They Shoot Horses Don't They? {Kill Rock Stars}), and Rodrigo Navarro (percussion). "FEED A FEVER" also features keyboard prodigy Tyson Naylor (organs and pianos), and the inimitable Joshua Wells (drums; Black Mountain {Jagjaguwar}, Blood Meridian {V2}). Beefing up the horn section on three of the tracks is astounding journeyman trumpeter J.P. Carter. With this cast of talented collaborators, and the resulting broad tonal palette, The BSESQ has topped their well-received debut.
