A TASTE OF IRVING BERLIN is a CD recording of 14 songs selected from the repertoire of a concert quartet of the same name.
The group is led by Leonard "Red" Balaban, former proprietor and band leader of Eddie Condon's, a well known New York City nightclub, and by Jim Fryer, a brass teacher at several prominent Southern Connecticut music schools.
The quarter, with Fryer on brass and Balaban on guitar includes Paul Boemke on reeds and Jim Tutunjian on string bass.
While the musicians are jazz oriented, the presentation is reasonably faithful to Berlin's original music.
Vocals are included on all but one of the songs which include such standards as "Alexander's Ragtime Band" "All Alone (by the telephone)," "Lazy," "All by Myself, "Mandy" "The Song in Ended," "Remember (the night)," "Shakin' the Blues Away" and "At the Devil's Ball."
