In 1973, six local musicians who were working steady jobs at various hotels in Las Vegas thought it would be great to get a job one day a week where they could play some fun music and have a few laughs. They contacted a young club owner, Michael Gaughan who had just opened a small casino off the strip called the Royal Inn. He agreed to let the band play on Sunday afternoons from noon until 5:00 PM.
After eighteen Sundays the lounge was so crowded you couldn't move in the place so he said, "Let's try it everyday for a week and see how it goes". That was almost 30 years ago and with some changes in personnel and a couple of name modifications, Michael Gaughan still has his lucky charm, his Dixie Band.
Jim Fitzgerald, who is the only remaining member of the original group, and the Kinda Dixie Jazz Band will carry on the traditions that were establlished over 30 years ago when those six guys just wanted to have some fun playing music.
The band has gone through a variety of changes over the years.
Starting as a fairly standard Dixieland Band, it has progressed into a very versatile entertaining unit with a wide range of material. The most notable change has been the variety of four way vocals. Bob Flanigan, the founder and leader of the Four Freshmen, was very helpful in getting the band started singing by giving them a whole stack of Freshmen arrangements. From there the band has gone on to include arrangements by The Modernaires, The Pied Pipers, The Four Lads, The Four Coins, The Mills Bros, The Ink Spots, Manhattan Transfer and even The Sons of the Pioneers.
In addition the the vocal prowess of this group, their musicianship is by all means their most outstanding quality. The members of the band are first and foremost musicians, well trained and experienced professionals who have excelled in probably the most competitive music market there is today, Las Vegas, Nevada.
