Musical Chiaroscuro - A provocative look at Jennifer Barber
Nostalgic, sweet with just a bit of dark undercurrent, No Swimmin' in These Waters is Jennifer Lehua Barber's most recent work. Her fourth solo album, No Swimmin' explores themes of romance and humor, conveyed through new original material written by Jennifer, songs written for her by members of the production team, and classics arranged by master composer-arranger-performer Michael Ruff.
Jennifer Barber's voice is like a good cup of Kona coffee, both smoky and smooth, sweet and dark, with hints of the familiar and the exotic. Jennifer's music includes a mélange of contemporary pop, county, r&b, jazz and rock. Like her music, Jennifer Lehua Nash Barber is a blend of mainland and Hawaii, with roots in both places. Born and raised in Redondo Beach, California, Jennifer is half Hawaiian and half Tennessee hillbilly.
Music is in her blood from her mother's side, the legendary Ka'apana family from Kalapana on the Big Island. Recording artists and masters of ki ho'alu (slack key guitar) and traditional Hawaiian vocal styles, her relatives include grandmother Mama Tina Ka'apana and grandfather George Ka'apana, mother Lehua Ka'apana Nash, uncles Ledward and Ned Ka'apana, great uncle Fred Punahoa and cousin Dennis Pavao, and more. Appreciation for different types of music is in her blood from her dad's side, with country and rock added to the mix. Jennifer attributes her creativity to her dad, a writer of songs and poetry who has collaborated with Jennifer on a number of songs.
Jennifer started singing when she was four. By age eight, Jennifer had auditioned for Nashville's Grand Old Opry with her mom and sisters Shirley and Glenda. Her favorite singers when growing up were Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou Harris, Jennifer Warnes, Hoyt Axton, and Buddy Holly. Jennifer married John Barber in 1989, and moved to Hawaii in 1992, where she started singing professionally in Honolulu. Her performances with local groups led to simultaneous releases in 1996 of her first solo album Jennifer and group effort Stardust from Way Up Here.
In 1998 she won a Hawaii Music Award for Live Performance Video. She was nominated four times from 1996 to 2000 for Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. In 1998, her second album, The Many Sides of Jennifer Barber, explored pop, r&b and country, and featured six of her own songs.
In 2001, in her third solo album Fly Away, Jennifer stepped out under her middle name as Lehua into r&b and hip-hop Hawaiian style - laid back but with a solid beat - and won the 2002 Hawaii Music Award for Best R&B Album of the Year. Working with producers Bob St. John and Danny Sembello, she created a strong mainland/Hawaii groove blend.
