As a composer and arranger, Charlie Smith has created an original and listenable sound that blends modern jazz, classic big band, orchestral works and pop music. His current project, Charlie Smith Circle, is an eleven-piece, jazz ensemble that regularly performs his work in the local venues of the Pacific Northwest. The band's unique instrumentation -- which includes voice, euphonium, and guitar - is the core of its fresh sound. It has included such members as trombonists Julian Priester and Chris Stover; saxophonists Hans Teuber, Saul Cline, Jay Thomas, Mark Taylor, and Craig Flory; pianist Dawn Clement; and trumpeters Jay Roulston and Vern Seelert. His compositions and arrangements have also been featured in a number of projects including Plush Utility, ZuZu Ben, The Cornish Jazz Orchestra, and the Johanna Kunin Quintet.
Charlie had his beginnings in jazz studying saxophone with Don Lanphere and Johnny Jessen. While earning his degree at Cornish College of the Arts, he studied saxophone with Hadley Caliman. He went on to study jazz piano with Dave Peck and composition and arranging with and Jim Knapp.
