In 1938 swing began a period of expansion. Although Fletcher Henderson's great band was now non-existent, new bands were gaining popularity with leaders Woody Herman, Bob Crosby and Count Basie. Cultural barriers were being broken. Benny Goodman lectured at the City College in New York and he and Count Basie appeared at Carnegie Hall. A major Manhattan hotel allowed the performance of a black swing band led by Chick Webb. The popular outdoor swing concerts were drawing fans who deliriously swayed and jitterbugged to the new sound of jazz. Many of the sidemen of the big bands, such as Larry Clinton, Gene Krupa and Harry James, saw quick success as they started their own bands.
The swing era not only grew in America but it was spreading overseas. England, always quick to appreciate American jazz, had now surrendered to swing and British musicians were recording records with the noted American jazz artist, Fats Waller.
