Track Notes:
NO FINGERPRINTS 6:38
Sometimes it's fast, clean and weirdly angular. Sometimes it's smooth, gritty and has a Latin feel. If you do the signature run down with minor 7th and 9th chords at the end of gig, it is possible to remove your fingerprints.
MO' DALI 7:50
Based on a funky minor riff, the "Mo' Dali" title came from the word "modally" (what a lazy approach to naming songs), but the track also had the sound of various clocks in it for a while, referencing Dali's landscapes of melting clocks. We removed the clocks in the final mix: the end of time?
NIGHTSHIFT AT DOSTOYEVSKY'S DINER 7:30
A moody but whimsical guy named Dostoyevski (not to be confused with Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky) works nightshift at his own 24-hour diner because can't stomach daylight. He sees the whole thing go down. Isn't that what all ballads are about?
FRAMED BY A WOODPECKER 6:25
An extended head frames both ends of this loose swing, and somewhere in it lurk a couple of five-note flurries that unintentionally reference Woody Woodpecker. You have to embrace your inner woodpecker.
ARROWHEAD DRIVES THE CAB 4:50
This tune used to be titled "Arrowhead" (we can't recall why), but it has a sort of caught-in-traffic sound that occurs when overly laid-back guys try to play uptempo swing maybe a few beats per minute faster than they're comfortable playing. Oh, and Steve's neighbor is a cab driver.
HEARSAY AT THE THINK TANK 7:12
The thing is to always cook something up that will entertain the other players. When you play with the same guys each week, you have to bring new ideas into the think tank. Remember those ads in the backs of comic books: Surprise Your Friends!
BIGFOOT'S FIRST DATE 8:15
"Muskrat Love" for the new millennium? The heavily whammy-barred guitar part was inaudible through the headphones when it was being recorded. The high (female?) guitar part was overdubbed in one take the morning after a late gig. This combination of not knowing what you're doing and only getting one chance seems to capture the awkwardness of the first date. We got lucky even if the big hairy guy didn't.
