MUSICAL SCHIZOPHRENIA AT ITS BEST
so what if reviews have ranged from "...the most creative act seen in a long time, if ever," [matt sturdevant, post star, may 20th, 2002] to a recent drunken attendee at one of their shows stating "if they don't knock it off, i'm going to punch them in the face,"?
HYPERBOLA, an idea or collective, (rather than using the term "band"), has already polarized their audiences, drawing a fine line between complete incoherent ambiguity and concrete minigroove/funk tunes. in fact, the sheer balance of hyperbola can be found by understanding where the band name originated....a cartesian principle based upon a set of x and y axes; two curves that, while sharing a common focus, never insect each other, nor the axes of which the curves are developed upon.
quite an interesting way to describe a band. and it shows in the sound.
the founders of the band, erongisled werdna, sretep gerg, and rahm mit, believe that the only way for society to create and heal at this crucial point in world history is to understand how to produce and capture the moment as it is happening, in whatever form possible, and however the form should be expressed, be it with a traditional setup (drums, bass, and keys), turntables, samplers, spoken word, gongs, xylophones, guitars, feedback or merely adjusting the waveforms and mixing of the sound board to develop a truly unique and innovative sound.
"there's only one unspoken rule at every show and practice: CREATE" - erongisled
the sound of HYPERBOLA can only be experienced, rather than expressed. from the trance-like grooves to abstract noise production in between sets and songs, the group serves as a conduit to all that happens within and external to ourselves at every performance. keeping with this philosophy, no song is ever played the same twice, and audiences are often surprised and anticipatory of the next change or paradigm shift HYPERBOLA will express at the live show.
the band has set ideas for each "song", yet prefers to maintain the core idealism of the group - and improvises 50% of every show they do. hard to believe? would never work?
it has. just ask the 300 people that recently packed the monopole in plattsburgh, ny may 17th so tightly that the club owner came by the club the next morning to ensure there wasn't any serious structural damage.
and that's just the start of it all, for a collective composed of three people with a vision, for a collective that's already opened for an impressive national act (king missile), and for a collective that's willing to share the belief (and the experience) with any and all willing to listen...
