Welcome to Long Island, where supposedly the grass is greener, the neighborhoods are nicer and Hip Hop does not live. As anywhere else in the world the hood is represented strong in LI, more than some residents would like. Not only does Hip Hop live here it was practically raised here with the likes of Public Enemy, EPMD, De La Soul, Leaders of the New School, the God Rakim and the list goes on. Although these names haven't ruled the airwaves in today's mainstream music, they helped inspire many Long Island natives in their time to pursue a career in the music industry. One particular group of individuals hailing from Bay Shore known simply as the B.U.R.N.T. Clique had the potential to be one of the hottest rap acts to come from Long Island. But due to life it took over thirteen years for a single album to be produced. This is just a sample.
On a cold February day in 1992 the B.U.R.N.T. Clique was created by two goalless Long Island youth, Sam "SUADOO" Duval and Sharon "S-ON" Ryan. Along with their daily cohorts of mischief, Kendrick "KENDOO" Seymore and Carlton "CB" Berry, these self proclaimed burnt out youngsters touched on a movement that would claim to be historical and boast nearly one hundred members to date.
Although B.C.'s conception was blueprinted through friendship and not music, the name was too powerful alone to be affiliated with a group of young men doing nothing but running the streets. By the summer of 92' B.C. was being shouted out on tape by S-ON on some of his first recordings. During the same time, neighborhood brethren, Bill "JAZ" Ayers, Gary "BIG WILL" Williams and Greg "DADDY GEE" Browne were creating there own sound on the other side of town. Then when one of the most vicious MC's around, Jason "J-BOOGIE" Hill was added to the equation along with Anthony "CAPITAL" Moratta ( nephew of Charlie Moratta, EPMD fame) the clique was now formed musically.
Because of Jaz and Will's departure to college the first music to be put out by the BURNT Clique consisted only of three members, S-ON, J-BOOGIE and CAP. Not only was this music vintage in its own right it also allowed them to perform on the stage with the likes of the Boot Camp Clique, Foxy Brown and Jay-Z while under a light management deal with a local promoter. With the heavy drum and sample sound created by Cap, songs like "Wild Wild East", "Dipladopest" and "Burnt and Ya Know it" were in heavy rotation through out the hood. Frequent visits to Stony Brook's college radio station helped the rest of the island witness what so many knew to be the next newness in music. Soon after that B.C. was dead musically.
With the transition of hip hop culture being passed down to the younger generation the music was lost, and the streets and gangs became the focal point of life. Jr. B.C. which consisted of the hoods next generation of rap stars started with much anticipation and drive but were led astray by the older members. Since the frontline was not focused business and career wise, Jr. B.C. ran the streets with no musical inspiration to record and carry the name on in the way it was planned.
After years of individuals in the group doing their own thing recording, banging, working and ballin, B.C. has been reunited not in full but in spirit. With the exception of a few original members who chose to distance themselves from the group because of other personal reasons, the B.U.R.N.T. clique was rebuilt with some new additions, the reemergence of some original members and the juniors stepping up to the frontline. Now the Brothers United Rectifying Negativity Together (clique) is a strong foundation with new goals for breaking into the music industry and helping the community. Look out for the prequel to the B.C. album, "HOOD GLORY" and your favorite group members' solo projects.
