Growing up in the Great North Woods for the first 18 years of her life, Alia sang for her audience of cows and got off the bus once a week at her piano teachers house. Her family then moved to Tamarack, MN- population: 53 people. Although it was heavenly, Alia quickly realized it may be a tough place to persue a performing career, so after graduating from the University of Stevens Point Wisconsin, she transported herself across the country to Portland, OR. Let the party begin!!
ALIA offers a new twist to the singer/ songwriter world, blending traditional roots music with many years of classical and jazz training. Her poetic lyrics work into the mix creating a style that is hard to put a label on~ an intricate folk sound with an edge of rock and an occasional bluegrass home base.
Occasionally you may find ALIA singing solo with guitar or piano accompanying her voice, but these days she is often joined by The Good Co., a crazy band of acoustic folksters and electric rockers- depending on the setting. Over the past year ALIA has also been seen playing the keys and singing tunes in The John Weinland Band. Because of her versatile style, she has been able to perform in a variety of settings ranging from environmental conventions in Alaska to coffee shops in Australia. She has provided an audio backdrop for art openings at the Yum Gallery in Hood River, performed on the film score for the Chroma Show, been a routine entertainer at the Montinore Vineyards in Forest Grove, and has now become a regular show at the Troutlake Country Inn. Among Portland performances she has shared the stage with Hot Buttered Rum at the Fez Ballroom, rocked out at the Doug Fir Lounge, and frequented several spotlight venues including Produce Row, the Holocene, Mississippi Pizza Pub, and Dante’s Inferno.
Many of ALIA’s songs have also been commissioned by various groups in the Midwest, such as the Afterimages dance program in Stevens Point, WI, as well as the Choral Department of the Hermantown School District. One of her compositions was chosen to be used as the theme song for the 2004 Women’s Expo in Minnesota, where she was flown to perform it live for the convention. She was also asked to compose an article on her creative method of lyric writing which was published in the nationally distributed newsletter, Meaning and Purpose.
ALIA & the Good Co. have just released a new cd, PLAYGROUND, filled with all original songs. It has the raw feel of music that is recorded in 1-2 takes, which gives it a completely new and refreshing energy!
