Andy Guthrie is a singer, pianist, guitarist, and composer. Born in 1972 on an Apache Indian reservation in Arizona, he lives and works in New York.
Andy Guthrie has recorded and produced three albums of original songs, currently available on www.cdbaby.com: least common denominator (1999), a mix of jazz and funk, 1616 Burdette (2000), live takes on solo piano and guitar, and Milk and Waste (2005), his third and most ambitious album as producer, writer, singer, pianist, and guitarist with New York musicians Martha Colby, Miki Hirose, Thomson Kneeland, and Rob Perkins. NPR All Songs Considered called this album "a bright and textured collection of jazzy pop tunes with wonderful harmonies and instrumentation."
Often compared to Tom Waits, Nick Drake or Tim Buckley, Andy Guthrie's music is at the same time passionate and controlled, sincere and sophisticated, vibrant and cynical. While he melts his remarkable voice with cello, trumpet, organ, guitar, piano, and bass; as he combines genres and moods, Andy creates a unique atmosphere and sound â€" a world of his own.
Andy Guthrie has played at many clubs in New York City, such as The Living Room, Gaslight, The Sidewalk Café, CB’s 313, The Triad Lounge and others. Trained as a composer (M.A. in Music Composition, Tulane University, 2001), Andy Guthrie has also been involved in the performance, composition and direction of numerous musicals, classical and jazz concerts, and recently composed for Off Broadway play Women Slightly on the Edge at the American Globe Theatre, New York (spring 2005).
