MONTREAL, JULY 2004
PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
"Playtime", the debut from newcomer aKido on Nordique Records is now available worldwide through www.akido.biz and CDBaby. A musician who's roots are in alt.rock music, aKido creates luminous instrumental electronic music with firm song arrangements, simple yet meticulous programming and tasty guitar playing. A musical bricolage, made with a laptop and guitars. Imagine bits of Moby, the melancholy feel of Boards of Canada, and the quirkiness of Zappa condensed into a 30 minute - 7 song album!
The opening track, "Happine$$", is an unusual 7/4 house track with a gentle melody of mellotron choir, and distorted guitars...now that's contrast. "La Mémoire de l'Onde" takes the listener on a stunning walk through a jungle of pounding syncopated beats lead by an elephant-size raunchy bassline and a Commodore64 melody. The 1st single off "Playtime" is "China Babies". With it's oriental vibe, hypnotizing hiphop beat and playful guitar riff, it slowly evolves into an engaging and heartwarming epic piece where the listener is constantly surprised by the twists and turns the music is taking. The track "Neurones Miroirs" is a beautiful number with many layers of irregular and whirling melodies and rhythms. Next track: imagine what Nine Inch Nails and King Crimson's illegitimate child would sound like, and you have "Monoculture", the loudest riff you've heard in a long time.
The title track, "Playtime", is an homage to French filmmaker Jacques Tati's film of the same name. 60's rock guitar, harpsichord and trumpets meet for something that's not really rock, not really electronica, but gloriously both. One thing is for sure, it has an addictive melody you'll be humming all day long. The last track on the album, "Such a Waste", features delicate piano lines and unusual chill-out drum and bass riffage.
This is aKido's first official release and musical excursion into intrumentalism, having spent the 90's in alt.rock bands like "Magma Dogma" and "Zolof" with his drumming brother Martin, who now performs live with aKido.
This is an Internet only release that should not be missed. PLAYTIME, the first album by aKido. For more info visit: www.akido.biz
