The music on this album was created by two people, Chandler Fritz and Todd Eckle, a drums and guitar duo from the midwest.
During the time we were working on this album, we lived about 3 1/2 hours away from each other, myself in Chicago, and Chandler in Mazomanie, WI. Beginning in July of 2003, we started meeting up and playing in a variety of locations, usually a reheasal studio in chicago, or in whatever room was open at Chandler's house. In the summer, we'd set up outside (as depicted on the album cover and cd label) and in the deep snow of winter, we holed up in a lake house near East Troy, WI.
Although the majority of this music is just drums and guitar, we also dabbled with Propellarhead Reason software, which allowed us to play live on top of loops (track 7, Geno Sapio) and and to manipulate programmed beats in response to live guitar (track 5, Petal Eight).
In May 2004, we recorded in Chicago's Stray Dog Studios and recorded as many songs as we could, each in one take. The majority of these tracks were kept intact, and a couple (5, 6, & 7) were edited in soundforge.
An overview of the Songs:
Track 1. Intro
This was improvised in the studio and was literally the first thing we played. It was cut in half and the second half became track 9.
2. What's My Number?
This song was written by selecting a random number out of a Lake Buelah phone book and appliying those numbers to chord arrangements on a guitar.
3. Echoplex
Named after a guitar pedal I believe. Just the two of us playing our intruments.
4. Kids Got Heart
Inspired after a night in Chicago's Green Mill. Dedicated to Darren Elliot.
5. Petal Eight
This ended up being the only electronica based hybrid on the album.
Chandler tuned his guitar down to some strange indian tuning. The tuning was also used on tracks 1 and 9.
6. Nickolas
Improvised that day. Named after an old dog in the studio that slept through everything we played.
7. Geno Sapio
This song originated from a line we wrote on a steel drum. The steel drum was eventually replaced by a voice in Reason.
8. Couples Skate
An all acoustic ballad. Speaks for itself.
9. Outro
