A churning beat, driving organ and bass and tight horn parts get Vancouver's sextet Crash's new CD off the blocks quickly. The record has a Maceo Parker feel to it, a marriage of jazz improvisation and funky dance rhythms, with an accent on the latter.

The musicians, which on disc include Cory Weeds on alto saxophone, Jerry Cook on tenor sax, Dave Sikula on guitar, Mike Kinney on keyboards, Brad Ferguson on bass (alternating with André Lachance) and James Kaufmann on drums, work for the good of the group, concentrating on tight arrangements and solos which don't draw attention away from the band sound. If there is one standout, however, it would be the electric-bass tandem of Ferguson, a former Berklee College of Music student, and Lachance, who both lay down a solid foundation, occasionally cutting loose for short solos.

Highlights of the disc include Cook's dreamy mid-tempo funk S.R.P., the rolling New Orleans' flavored Digs (also written by Cook) and Sikula's melodic Interogotif.
