From Japan to Honolulu, Coppe' (pronounce Co-pa'y) casts a delightful light on a world too often devoid of poetry. A self confessed music junky, she is too unique and precious to be overlooked.
Named Yoshimi, which means pure, good and beautiful, when she was born, in Tokyo some years ago, she was nicknamed Coppe' by her mother on the day of her birth because she looked like a squashed loaf of bread of the same name. Coppe' spent most of her childhood between the Japanese capital and Honolulu, learning classical piano and ballet from the age of three. A few years later, she moved to Arizona, set up a studio and started exploring textures and abstraction through electronic music.
If her music flirts with the angelic world of a Bjork or the abstract wanderings of a Nicolette, the roots of her inspiration can actually be found in some of the greatest jazz singers of the 20th century. Connections with Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald might not automatically come to mind while listening to Coppe', but she injects her compositions and performances with the same raw intensity and heartfelt emotion.
Since her move to the US, Coppe' has released five albums on her exotically named Mango + Sweet Rice label, and worked with a myriad of high profile luminaries, including Plaid, DJ Vadim, The Program and Kris Weston, once known as Thrash when he officiated alongside Dr. Alex Patterson in the seminal The Orb.
Her two most recent offerings came out earlier this year. Papa My Buddha was recroded while Coppe's late dad was in hospital, and it is haunted by sounds of medical equipment and snippets of hospital atmosphere caught on a mini-disc player. Beautiful and intimate, this album reflects the emotionally intense moments Coppe' faced during this time. It is her most personal record to date. The more festive Mercury was recorded with London based duo The Program. The collaboration is a much more upfront take on drum'n'bass and electronica.
Following the death of her father, Coppe' recently relocated to Honolulu to be nearer her mother. Never short of ideas, Coppe' is currently working on an album with Kris Weston, taking their previous collaborative work, on Peppermint and Papa My Buddha even further.
Coppe's universe is full of shooting stars, hideous monsters and little girls in uniforms. Her songs are twisted spaced-out lyrics sung, or muttered, either in English or Japanese, and come wrapped-up in colorful flowery papaer. Watch out for a tsunami called Coppe'...
