The myriad facets of love have probably enticed us since it occurred to us to think. Our species might have been better off never to have meandered upon this metaphorical path but meander we did, and because we did, a curious thing evolved: the love song. Cultures Eastern and Western abound with rich examples, and our American culture is no exception. Some of our best songs are the creations of thoughtful people who studied their art and strove to offer something timeless and meaningful about the aspects of romance.
The love songs of this collection reflect a huge emotional and intellectual range. Perhaps this is a reason we visit these standards again and again, and let them haunt us. Each time we hear a favorite, it thrusts into the present some memory of love, whether the song is dark, light or of mixed emotion.
