Nancy and Phil Halpin began singing & playing together in 1970, the year they were married. Nancy handles the big stand-up bass & vocal harmonies backing up Phil's fine vocals & guitar.

They began their professional career around 1985 traveling with their 3 children around Southern California performing at festivals, service clubs and special events.... including Disneyland.

On this recording, "A Good Afternoon", Nancy & Phil are joined by their grown son, Luke, on mandolin, fiddle & vocal harmonies.

The songs are a mix of originals inspired by their family experiences and several of their favorite old standards.

"We love the pure acoustic sound and songs with a
clear message and timeless appeal."

Review:

Nancy & Phil
"A Good Afternoon"
review by Jimi Yamagishi

"A good afternoon is the summer sun a-shinin'...sittin' on the porch...my sleepin' dog & me, takin' it easy..."

Nancy & Phil evoke a simpler time, with the rich resonance of Nancy's upright bass complimenting Phil's fingerstyle guitar & homespun vocals. Their son Luke weaves his mandolin & fiddle thru the mix to complete the picture.
Although a few standards such as "Sunny side of the Street" & "As Time goes By" are covered here, Nancy & Phil's original songs are the reason you really need to add this CD to your collection.

Listening to the title cut is like stepping thru a time machine into a sepia-toned small town picture postcard place, & sets the tone for the rest of this collection of musical vignettes.

"Million Dollar Bill" is a heartwarming story of a simple man & the love he shares with his wife, come what may.
"Mama's Home" is a touching reflection of a mother's presence in our lives & homes, & all the good things mom represents.
"Winter Winds" marks the passage of time, and how a good relationship can remain strong, "Because winter winds become summer breezes, & after the freeze, we'll be fine"

Their closing song, "An Hour left for Love", wraps up this collection perfectly with the realization that in this era of multitasking & trying to cram 26 hours in a day, at the end of the day, what still counts most is our relationships with those we hold most dear.

"A Good Afternoon" is a CD you'll want to take out on the back porch with a cool drink by yourself, at a time when you can savor every word, so you can experience the warm comfortable images Nancy & Phil paint with their unique palette of harmony & instrumental colors.
