"A terrific debut album! Unearthed gems...clever and intelligent...a talented singer with a sonorous instrument, each and every lyric is interpreted with a clarity of sound and spirit. Cindy Benson can send shivers!"
Lesley Alexander WRTN-FM/WVOX-AM
"Lilting, amusing and occasionally heart-breaking delivery...this uplifting and well-crafted release is one of the finest examples of post-Broadway recordings"
Tom Kidd-The Music Connection
Cindy Benson is a tiny wisp of a thing with a voice that can break your heart one moment and leave you laughing helplessly the next. She travels genres and cross-pollinates cabaret with jazz and musical theater, injecting each style with her unmistakable personality. She somehow transforms her voice to inhabit an extraordinary range of material from the stratospheric intro of "Mr. Paganini" to a rich contralto in "Can't Help Lovin' That Man". Listening to her sing, you can feel each mood, expression, smile and sigh that brings her music alive. This collection of songs is truly a journey through the whims, the woe and whimsy of one of the most talented performers today.
Cindy Benson debuts her recording after a successful tenure on the Broadway stage starring as both the comedic lead, Mme. Thenardier, in LES MISERABLES, and the delightful 200-pound tap-dancing Gumbie Cat, Jennyanydots, in CATS. Off-Broadway credits include originating the role of Sister Robert Ann in NUNSENSE, as well as creating the wild and wacky Donna the Dominatrix in Paul Bartel's EATING RAOUL. She performed for PBS' GREAT PERFORMANCES at Symphony Hall in Boston, appeared with the Houston Grand Opera, and has won the Manhattan Association of Cabaret's Excellence in Musical Comedy Award. She can be heard on the original cast albums of LES MISERABLES, EATING RAOUL, ALL THAT HE WAS, BILLY BARNES REVUED, and on the S.T.A.G.E Series recording of ADLER, BOCK AND COLEMAN. Cindy works in Television & Film and has performed at the Mark Taper Forum (The First Picture Show) and The Reprise! Series ( Mack & Mabel). She is also a member of Theatre Neo and The Colony Theatre in Los Angeles. Cindy was nominated for the 1998 Los Angeles Theatre Ovation Award for her role as the eccentrically winsome Hollywood Usherette in BLAME IT ON THE MOVIES at the Pasadena Playhouse.
OUT ON A WHIM, the recording, originates from Cindy's one-woman show of the same name that was written and directed by David Man and produced by HBO Workspace. The show garnered three Los Angeles Dramalogue Awards and continues to play around the country. You can visit Cindy's web site at www.CindyBenson.com.(Currently under construction)
"A Comic Gem, a Showstopper" Wayman Wong-NY Daily News
"Cindy Benson is an outstanding comedienne and singer, the sort of performer who helps make Broadway musicals the worldwide success they are."
William Ruhlmann--NY CITY TRIBUNE
"Benson is devastating singing a torch song, turning it into an aching heartbreaker....there is an originality to Cindy Benson that makes her very much her own creation." Bob Harrington--NY POST
"Cindy Benson's superb comedic abilities are reminiscent of such movie comediennes as Betty Hutton, Nancy Walker and Martha Raye."
Julio Martinez--DAILY VARIETY
Producer & Director, DAVID MAN on CINDY BENSON
I've worked with Cindy since before the beginning of her career. Do you have any idea how long that is? Never mind, it's been worth it. I was determined that this would not be one of those ego stroking pieces of puffery about how she has such an extraordinary voice (opera singers come to see her and try to figure out how she does what she does!) or how funny she is (the New York Post called her "a comic genius") or how she can turn around and break your heart with a simple ballad--No, I'm not going to do any of that.
I've worked with a lot of "big names" in the last 25 years, but no bigger talent than Cindy Benson. I think the most important impact that Cindy has made on me is reflected in the faces of her audiences. The people who come back to see her time after time because, once seen, she becomes a tenant who occupies a permanent place in your heart. If you have a better way to describe her, tell me about it--or better yet, tell a friend!
