"MUSIC FOR A FESTIVE OCCASION" JADCD 1048

Works by: Peter Sculthorpe, Betty Beath, Ian Shanahan, Lawrence Bartlett, Colin Spiers, Colin Brumby, Lawrence Bartlett, Robert Allworth, Eric Gross, Dulcie Holland, Ann Carr-Boyd. Duration: 70.06

Notes from the producer: Represented are composers from various States of the Commonwealth of Australia, with music of varying styles from Neo Classic to Avant Garde. The Music on this recording gives listeners overseas as well Australians an overview of much of the type of music composition happening in Australia to-day. We hear from composers well known in Australia such as Peter Sculthorpe, Eric Gross, Colin Brumby. Robert Allworth and Lawrence Bartlett. Our leading women composers are represented by Dulcie Holland, Ann Car Boyd and Betty Beath.

From the Avant Garde we have music by lan Shanahan and Colin Spiers. lan Shanahan is represented by his composition "Cycles of Vega" completed in 1991 The work was commissioned by Roslyn Dunlop through the Australian Council, and was first performed at the 1991 Sydney Spring Festival, an important musical event directed by Roger Woodward. This recording was produced by lan Shanahan and was edited and mastered engineered by Greg White at the Sydney
Conservatorium of music on 10/1/92.

Colin Spiers is represented by his 1991 composition "Flecks". This short piece occupies the genre of the nineteenth and early twentieth century piano etude, where flair and brilliance for their own sake were often the main aesthetic motivation. The music is intended to depict the randomly flashing lights and colours of a brilliant opal - an effect hopefully achieved through the technical device of pointillist texture.
