SINGING TRUCKER RELEASES SECOND ALBUM
David Cline, the singing Texas trucker whose self-financed debut album, Heart and Soul, landed on a nomination list for a Grammy award back in February 2001, is back with a new CD.
The silver-haired driver with pipes of gold has released Another Man's Treasure and it looks like this new collection of six original songs and four covers of old standards like "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "I Walk Alone" will resonate just as strongly with fans of country and western swing music.
Within hours of putting one of the new tunes on the air, a ditty with the tongue-twisting title, "Lovey Dubby Chubby Hubby," DJ Mark Aulabaugh as KSEY-FM in Seymour, Texas, called Cline to tell him the song had zoomed to the top spot on the station's most requested play list.
According to the album notes, Cline wrote the song "...for all us old chubby guys."
Partial to fancy cowboy duds, the truckin' Texan wrote "Longhorn Cattle Baron" based on his experiences raising cattle on his 11-acre ranch, and "Another Man's Treasure," a tribute to his father. On his first album, the cover song "Heart and Soul" was inspired by his Mother.
Two more songs,"Bar to Bar, Stool to Stool" and "Truck Driving," were penned in collaboration with Philip Russell, who has the distinction of being country artist Loretta Lynn's son-in-law and a member in her Coal Miner Band.
Like the first album,...Treasure is produced by Patrick McGuire for Cline and his wife Becky under the couple's Circle Wire Records label. The couple is pictured on the album's back cover along with Cline's Western Star tractor(637,000 miles and counting), along with his "...dawg and a couple of his longhorns."
While he didn't win a Grammy, the fact his first recording effort caught the attention of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) surprised and pleased the freshman recording artist. Perhaps better than an award was the nomination's validation of his fledgling singing and song-writing talents. "It was a thrill just to be nominated." he says.
A trucker for 23 years, he operates his co-owned (with partner Leon Philpot) company, A/C Equipment Unlimited, Inc., and continues to drive the road.
