Clementi is George and Jay Clementi, the father/son duo who hail from the
Denver, Colorado area. In 2002 "Clementi "their self titled debut was
released on Ground Star Records, through Universal Nashville.
From the time Jay was a boy he performed with his father's weekend bar band.
By his teens he was the front man of the popular band, The Rio Grande Kings.
With Dad stepping back playing his signature guitar licks on his old
mail-order 1967 Silvertone and adding harmony. The Kings won numerous
battles of the bands, through the 90's and amassed a big Colorado following.
"I grew up listening to stuff like Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Faron Young
and Ray Price. My dad and I always sang Everly Brothers tunes because we
loved the tight harmonies." Jay says. That love of the Everly Brothers and
traditional country icons helped form their unique sound.
Jay moved to Nashville in 97' and began amassing a catalog of original
tunes. One of the people to notice Clementi's fresh and intriguing sound was
respected publisher Pat Higdon, senior vice-president and general manager of
Universal Publishing in Nashville.
Pat listened to his head and his heart. He underwrote an album of tunes by
the father-son duo and produced by acclaimed hit maker, Radney Foster. The
compilation was completed spring 2002.
Jay's early demo caught the attention of Foster "I met with Jay and told him
he wrote good songs and had a cool sound, but seems to have no clear musical
direction,"" explains Foster. Jay told him "I feel like I've lost my musical
compass."" When asked by Foster what was his "musical compass", Jay replied
My Dad. We always sang and wrote together and I miss what we used to do
together on stage." George arranged to fly into Nashville and perform with
his son for Radney. "They blew me away and I knew then that George was the
missing link in Jay's music," claims Foster.
If you ever get a chance to see these two guys together, you need to.
They have an unmistakable sound that is classic.
You can't just put two guys together and make them sound like this, it's
years in the making.Indeed they are.
