Alive & Well may not look like a stereotypical Americana outfit, but its inspired blend of warm vocal harmonies and intricate, soulful melodies would pass any sonic test one might apply. The acoustic duo's debut, "Life is Short," was born of an eight-year collaboration between cellist/guitarist Michael Shay and guitarist Geoff Union.

Equal parts finger-picking bluegrass, achy-breaky blues and strum-along progressive country, the record digs deep into the heart of American roots music to put a new spin on a traditional sound. -Austin American Statesman July 6, 2002
