Music, to me, has only two categories: music I like and music I don't like. Theres is not even good music and bad music. And all genres are "popular" music. Some persons wish a distinction between "popular" and "classical" music. Maybe that makes them feel "above" the "masses" that listen to "popular music. That does not bother me. One may be more elaborate than the other, but certainly one is not less beautiful or moving to each listener than another.
Unfortunately for opera, tradition requires that all singers have to sound alike; and they go to schools where they are taught to "sound like an opera singer." Their voices are made uniform; just like a trombone sounds like another trombone, or every french horn sound alike. (Well, not really, not every sax sounds like Stan Getz). Opera is missing on the peculiarities of the human instrument.
Opera is for all, it's "popular" music. I enjoy singing it with my own voice. My voice sounds different (I hope). Maybe it is a voice you like. If so, enjoy!
