Alquimia

Alquimia (pronounced Alkeemia) is a singer-songwriter and composer, and her name means alchemy, the mediaeval science of transformation.

Biography

Alquimia began singing when she was a very young child. She was encouraged by her mother who had been an operatic soprano singer in her home town, and Alquimia soon developed a familiarity with opera songs in Italian, French, and Spanish. As she grew up, she went to school in France and Canada where she studied piano and composition, and begun composing her own ballads.

Later, she became involved in the traditional music of her own country Mexico which led to her learning to sing in dialects such as Mayan, Nahuatl, and Otomi amongst others. Having developed this facility for singing in different dialects and languages, Alquimia then became interested in the traditional music of other countries and she thought the best way to learn more was by travelling to Europe, so she established herself in England, where she developed a great interest for Celtic themes.

Now living in London, Alquimia incorporates a wide variety of influences into her unique musical style, ranging from folk music via mediaeval and classical music to ambient and world music, singing in English, Spanish, French, Gaelic, Latin, Italian and the Aztec Nahuatl language among many others, with her extraordinary voice, which, with her linguistic facility, allows her to augment her soprano range with extra octaves and numerous unusual textures.

Her unique voice and affinity with so many different singing styles, led her to work in Europe with various musicians, collaborating on CD's with composers inluding Germany's Roedelius (Cluster and Eno), Rudiger Gleisberg, Peter Mergener, Zinkl, Stella Maris, Art Of Infinity, JLF Ledesma, Mark Powell, Mark Jenkins, and many more. .


Alquimia continued to break new ground when she was invited by Michael Nyman to perform as guest vocal soloist on the Michael Nyman Band summer European tour.
She also performs live both solo and as a member of other bands such as Quilombo Expontaneo, and recently Karnataka.
Additionally, she is currently working on a new album project of voices and effects only, called “Voice Waves” due to be released later this year.
