Alexey Gorokholinsky
Clarinetist
Clarinetist Alexey Gorokholinsky has acquired an impressive list of awards to his name from such competitions as the Pasadena Instrumental Competition, Spotlight Competition in Los Angeles, California, and ICA Young Artist Competition in Tokyo. Most recently in 2004, Mr. Gorokholinsky claimed First Prize at the Juilliard School Concerto Competition, which culminated in his New York Debut in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, performing the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Otto-Werner Mueller.
Eastern European performances have taken Mr. Gorokholinsky on tour throughout his native Russia as a featured artist of the innovative "New Names" rising stars series. Numerous performances from these prominent tours were broadcast throughout the country via national radio and television media, and on United States airwaves, Mr. Gorokholinsky has been heard on several occasions since 2002 via the national broadcasting station "From the Top." In 2003, he recorded his debut disc with Classical Records entitled Time Pieces, showcasing an assorted mix of works for clarinet & piano by Debussy, Milhaud and Muczynski. January 2005 marked Mr. Gorokholinsky's recording debut with the NAXOS label, as principal clarinetist for Sagesse, one of several works to be included on a collaborative disc of world premieres, slated for international commercial release later this year.
Mr. Gorokholinsky is a prolific chamber ensemble musician, frequently collaborating in a woodwind quintet with rising stars Alexander Popov (bassoon), Arthur Sato (oboe), Todor Postoyanov (horn), and Jasmine Choi (flute). Additionally working as an orchestral musician, Mr. Gorokholinsky has been led under the direction of Maestros James Conlon, Denis Segond, Ransom Wilson, Mark Stringer, James DePriest, and David Hong.
Alexey Gorokholinsky began studying the piano at age four under the instruction of his mother, established pianist and Moscow Conservatory Professor Marina Gorokholinsky. Soon after discovering the clarinet at age seven, the precocious young talent was accepted to the prestigious Central Music School in Moscow, where he began rigorous training under the guidance of Vladimir Sokolov. In 1999, he was admitted to the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California, where his studies continued as a full scholarship student of Professor Yehuda Gilad. Currently working towards earning his undergraduate degree from the renowned Juilliard School in New York, Mr. Gorokholinsky is a pupil in the studio of Charles Niedich, and has been named a recipient of the Bidu Sayao Scholarship, the Paul Louis Berlin Scholarship and the Fredericka Schick Horochiloff Award.
