Southwest Blues Magazine Review of "It's Good To Be King"

Hurst Texas! Finally I get to review a blues band from Hurst! You see people, dreams do come true! Okay, seriously, Big Smoo and the royalty of the trailer park are on the scene with their brand new CD "It's Good To Be King" and it's a lot of fun. Great songs with great music. Thirteen tracks, some original, some cover. These guys know how to jam. Chris Andrews on guitar and vocals. Lou Tielli also on guitar and vocals. Mark Murray on bass and vocals. Jimmy Stephens on drums and Doug Norwine on harmonica. The band formed way back in the year of our Lord 1990, back when the world still made sense, and as near as I can figure out, they seem to have a blast playing good old fashion, hard rocking, Texas flavored blues.

Check out the energetic jumping of the tune "Papa's Little Friend". Check out the cool vibe on the tune "Can't Do Right" or the hard driving bass line on "Three Chords & Attitude". On the later tune, Andrews tells the story of a meeting with Omar from Omar and the Howlers. Omar imparts some musical wisdom to our songwriter; "We've got three chords and some attitude." This song features a smoking harmonica solo by Norwine. Check out how the guys handle the McCain tune "She's Tough". I confess I have a hard time listening to anyone but Kim Wilson (and whoever is in the T-Birds this week) handle this particular song just because he always does such a bang up job on it, but Smoo and company surprised me with a great version! Again, major applause for the harp work on this track. Not to shortchange the guitars at all. Check out the ultra great ax work on "Sand Bass Fishin'". How often do you hear a song about sand bass?

Seek out Big Smoo and the Trailer Park Kings. You will be glad you did. Thanks Hurst!
