Who is the Blues Buddha? Like other superheroes, he has a daytime persona, known as Tommy Dudley. Tommy, or TD, is a gifted Blues singer.
The Blues, with its acknowledgement of life's woes yet always-enduring spirit, perfectly embodies TD's outlook on life and music. TD's special touch is in bringing a more R&B/Funk feel to the Blues than the usual crooner.
While other little boys played with dolls and guns, Tommy cranked up his turntable and soaked in the elixir of Soul music. In fact, TD found his way to the Blues via Soul and Funk, working his way backwards to the Blues roots of so many modern musical genres. Tommy has played jams and gigs all over the country: Detroit, Chicago, Washington, Baltimore, Memphis, New York. He plays corporate events and parties, performs showcases and does studio work. He is a proud member of the NY Blues and Jazz Society.
Like a back porch Blues dude from Mississippi, TD's musical education is primarily self-schooled, sprinkled with bouts of formal study. He studied voice with La-Rose Saxon, an opera and Broadway singer. Vocal lessons with a bass player who became a monk came and went. He currently studies with Katie Agresta, coach to stars such as Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Peter Frampton, Annie Lennox and Cyndi Lauper. An open-minded guru with an equal respect for tradition, TD has picked up stylistic influences from people he admires and mixes them into his own musical gumbo. Eclectic influences include: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Joe Cocker, David Clayton Thomas of Blood, Sweat and Tears, Tom Jones, the straight-ahead blues and rock of Eric Burdon, R&B artists Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding and even early Elvis Presley.
This is the Blues Buddha's first release. Band members have played with names from Peter Frampton to Bob Dylan, Hall and Oates, Tony Bennett, Dire Straits, Bo Diddley, Bryan Adams, Otis Rush and many other big names. Players featured are: Benny Landa, guitar; Kenny Aronson, bass: Paul Triff, drums; Tommy Mandel, keyboards.
The Blues Buddha appreciates the pain turned to humor and comfort of the Blues, the culture, freedom and fun of the Blues. The Blues Buddha says, “The Blues is about survival. That's why it doesn't die.†Bask with us in the transcendental consolation of some Funky Blues Buddha tunes today.
