Music is poetry, and any piece of poetry you can sing is music. That is “Eye of the Storm.” Poetry and Music. The songs came from a wide range of influences, and each one has a message. Fun is first and foremost the importance on this album. It’s not depressing; it’s a happy album.

Listen to “Bikerman” and “Politician.” Both are about people on a mission. “Karma Road, “The Lord Loves Those,” “Forgive Me Lord,” and “Dirt Road Blues” take on the spiritual side of life. “You Drive Me Crazy,” “My Guitar Sings To Me,” and “Eye of the Storm” are rockers with messages of love and peace. “My Love” and “Forever Love” are for the romantics. “I Sat In Wonder,” “It’s So Hard,” “Get Up!” round out the disc with unique styles and messages in each song. No two songs sound the same.

Like the varying songs, the song styles vary. There are hints of the blues, country, old standards, eastern influences, folk, and of course rock & roll. This comes from the influences I have. Listening to music from The Beatles, Robert Johnson, Frank Sinatra, Queen, BB King, Johnny Cash, The Byrds, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Pink Floyd can’t help but bleed into the music I play and write.

I love the sound of the recordings made by Elvis at Sun Records Studio, The Beatles’ first two records, and other recordings down through the years that had a raw, intimate feel to them. I love music where you can hear the emphasis was on the music and not on the production. It’s that “almost live” sound that I went for on “Eye of the Storm.”

---Scott Harrell

Here is a series of questions asked to Scott upon the release of "Eye of the Storm" in Feb. 2004.

1) When did you first start listening to music? Oh, that's hard to pin point. There has always been music in the home thanks mostly to my Mum. She would play Motown records and a few disco songs. She would always have American Bandstand and Soul Train on the TV.

2) What was your first record/CD? It was a record. Actually, the first record I remember being bought was Michael Jackson's "Thriller." A great album. The first record (45) I bought was either "Radio Ga-Ga" by Queen or "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits. I don't remember exactly which came first. I still have them too.

3) When did you first want to play guitar? When I saw Queen's video for "I Want It All." That sound was mind blowing. Right then, I wanted to play.

4) Seems Queen is a big influence on you. "Eye of the Storm" doesn't sound very Queen heavy. Why is that? Yeah, I love Queen. I don't want to sound like Queen. There are some "Queen-like-moments" scattered about the CD, but I didn't want to come across as a cover band. I want to be and sound like me.

5) Who are other musical influences? George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Sammy Hagar, Elvis, Eric Clapton, and Chuck Berry.

6) What do you try to do in your songs? Have fun mostly. If I like the song, that is good enough for me. I write about things that are going on within and without me. I think it is a great thing if someone else can identify with what I am saying. In the end, the music has to please me.

7) Your CD doesn't seem to follow the standard rules of music production used today. That is right. For one, I didn't have the budget. More importantly, I didn't want a slick record. There are moments where things are a little rough around the edges. To me that is OK with this record. I am spreading my wings. I am learning. Besides, I think that records that are a little rough sound more human and personal. No one is perfect. Why should a record be perfect?

8) Are you going to record again? Oh yes. Most definately.

9) Any ideas on the next album? Umm, do you mean concept or time frame? Really right now, I am just collecting ideas. There is no real form to the next set of songs yet. I just want to let things formulate first.

10) How were the live performances? They were good. I did a small solo acoustic tour. Some of the songs don't translate well into an acoustic set and some do. I got a good trial-by-fire on that.

11) I have read and heard reviews that your singing is the weakest point of your performances and CD. What are your thoughts on that? I will agree with that to a degree. I am not Freddie Mercury or Frank Sinatra. I don't pretend to be. I have seen where I am compared to Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Roger Waters, and the like. Hey! Look at those names! I feel it is an honor to be compared with those guys. Upset? Me? No way.
